چکیده

We present the properties of the 12CO(1-0) and (3-2) line emission from the nuclei of 60 IR luminous SLUGS galaxies. This subsample is flux limited at S60μm ≥ 5.24 Jy with FIR luminosities mostly at LFIR > 10 10 L⊙. The emission line strengths of 12CO(1-0) and (3-2) transitions were compared at a common resolution of ∼ 15, and the line ratios r31 vary from 0.22 to 1.72 with a mean value of 0.66 for the sources observed, indicating a large spread of the degree of excitation of CO in the sample. Our analysis shows that (1) there is a non-linear relation between CO and FIR luminosities, such that their ratio LCO/LFIR decreases linearly with increasing LFIR, (2) we find a possible dependence of the degree of CO gas excitation on the efficiency of star forming activity, (3) using the large velocity gradient (LVG) approximation to model the observed data, the results show that the mean value of the CO-to-H2 conversion factor X for the SLUGS sample is lower by a factor of 10 compared to the conventional value derived for the Galaxy, assuming that the abundance of CO relative to H2 is 10 −4, (4) due to a contribution to the SCUBA brightness measurement by 12CO(3-2) emission, the average dust mass is reduced by 25-38% , and the mean global gas-to-dust mass ratio is reduced from 430 to 360, but is further reduced to 100 when applied to the nuclear regions of the SLUGS galaxies, (5) for a subset of 12 galaxies with H I maps, we derive a mean total face-on surface density of H2+H I of about 42 M⊙ pc −2 within ∼ 2 kpc of the nucleus, which is intermediate between that in galaxies like our own and those with strong star formation.

Probing the Interstellar Medium of Z ∼ 1 Ultra-luminous Infrared Galaxies through Interferometric Observations of Co and Spitzer Mid-infrared Spectroscopy

We explore the relationship between gas, dust and star formation in a sample of 12 ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at high redshift compared to a similar sample of local galaxies. We present new CO observations and/or Spitzer mid-IR spectroscopy for 6 70μm-selected galaxies at z ∼ 1 in order to quantify the properties of the molecular gas reservoir, the contribution of an active galac...

A Molecular Gas Survey of Z < 0.2 Infrared Excess, Optical Qsos

Millimeter-wave (CO) observations of optically-selected QSOs are potentially a powerful tool for studying the properties of both the QSOs and their host galaxies. We summarize here a recent molecular gas survey of z < 0.17 optical QSOs with infrared (IR) excess, LIR(8 − 1000μm)/Lbbb(0.1 − 1.0μm) > 0.36. Eight of these QSOs have been detected to date in CO(1 → 0), and the derived molecular gas m...

HCN Survey of Normal Spiral, IR-luminous and Ultraluminous Galaxies

We report systematic HCN J=1-0 (and CO) observations of a sample of 53 infrared (IR) and/or CO-bright and/or luminous galaxies, including seven ultraluminous infrared galaxies, nearly 20 luminous infrared galaxies, and more than a dozen of the nearest normal spiral galaxies. This is the largest and most sensitive HCN survey of galaxies to date. All galaxies observed so far follow the tight corr...

Erratum: ““molecular Gas in Infrared-excess, Optically Selected Quasars and the Connection with Infrared-luminous Galaxies Ïï [astron. J. 121, 1893 (2001)]

The initial results of a millimeter (CO) survey of infrared-excess, optically selected quasars from the Palomar-Green (PG) Bright Quasar Survey with redshifts in the range 0.04\ z\ 0.17 are presented. These observations represent the Ðrst step toward establishing with a complete sample whether or not quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) reside in molecular gasÈrich galaxies, as well as determining how ...

A Search for Dense Molecular Gas in High Redshift Infrared-Luminous Galaxies

We present a search for HCN emission from four high redshift far infrared (IR) luminous galaxies. Current data and models suggest that these high z IR luminous galaxies represent a major starburst phase in the formation of spheroidal galaxies, although many of the sources also host luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN), such that a contribution to the dust heating by the AGN cannot be precluded...

CO Molecular Gas in Infrared Luminous Galaxies

We present the first statistical survey of the properties of the CO(1-0) and CO(3-2) line emission from the nuclei of a nearly complete subsample of 60 infrared (IR) luminous galaxies selected from SCUBA Local Universe Galaxy Survey (SLUGS). This subsample is flux limited at S60μm ≥ 5.24 Jy with far-IR (FIR) luminosities mostly at LFIR > 10 10 L⊙. We compare the emission line strengths of CO(1-...
